choosing fire: a heavy metal love story
Tyler is drifting through post university life and a dead-end relationship when he reconnects with a group of party animals in the heavy metal scene.
There are very few good movies about heavy metal, and none that truly represent the modern scene. Likewise, there are so many good coming of age stories, but none that reflect the culture I was a part of in my early twenties. Choosing Fire is a heavy metal coming of age story that follows Tyler as his life is shaken up by his reconnection with the scene, falling in love with his secondary-school crush, setting his sights on future, and walking headlong into a tornado of alcohol, drugs and chaos.
I wrote Choosing Fire during lockdown, when I was craving a bit of nightlife, love and excitement. It reflects the aimlessness of the post-university years, the glory of love and friendship at that age, and vibrantly evokes a huge music scene that is not on most peoples radars. It is a full length (99 page) screenplay, ready to be adapted for the screen.
