beneath the storm bell
After a life of vagrancy, the thief Ritter Hackora seeks redemption by joining the city watch, where he unwittingly becomes of the focus of a murderous ancient cult.
The world of Rhune is a late-medieval fantasy world that riffs on the tropes of the genre. While there are wizards, orcs and flying ships, i have tried to ground them in a super real world: what does a sky-ship smell like? what if orcish supremacy took hold? What religions would arise around storms that can destroy cities?
While Ritter attempts to find his purpose and redeem himself, the half-orc Oriana joins a cult that has taken root in the city, and the privateer Ulrich balances an illicit affair with his commitment to the crown. These story lines collide in an escalation of conflict as an immense storm bears down on the city.
I was inspired by books like The Edge Chronicles and His Dark Materials, which I read as a child, but the work is infused with the spirit of the ‘lost world’ genre popular in the late 1800s, and first hand accounts of warfare, exploration and travel from the early twentieth century.
I have completed the manuscript for Beneath The Storm Bell, and I aim to publish by traditional means in 2025. I am currently seeking a literary agent.
